A clear sense of identity is the internal compass that keeps a person headed on the path consistent with his or her interests and values; these programs are designed to foster that sense of identity.
To do so core skills must be developed. These skills are reflection, self-assessment and self-knowledge, and engaging programs such as Choices and Hands On can encourage the development and use of these skills. These programs also foster critical decision-making skills such as analysis of data and ranking of preferences. When a user makes choices about preferences in the process of using these tools, they are also building their sense of self and career identity. Simplicity, brevity, attractive colour, visual imagery and engagement are the key tools used within the programs to encourage reflection, a deeper understanding of self, and user empowerment. As the results of these programs are driven entirely by the user, they encourage confidence in career self-management.
The style and interface of the programs has proved very successful with diverse groups- differing ethnicities, age and competency groups have found this program works for them.
